BuddyBetter now available on the iPhone

December 15, 2007

After picking up an iPhone, I quickly became curious what it takes to develop a web app for the iPhone. Turns out, not much. Barrett told me over and over again, the phone browser is Safari. It took the act of developing an iphone app to finally get it. Only thing to watch for are viewports, small screen size, scaling and page orientation. My favorite trick in the iPhone is this:

// bounce to iPhone page if this is an iPhone
if (Request.UserAgent.Contains(“iPhone”))
Response.Redirect(“/i/”);

Sure, it would be best to create a separate stylesheet, but to get a production-level prototype, this sure does the trick.

….. and who knew ASP.NET would be a good platform for iPhone web apps? Login, bet display and bet choice in around six hours. Not bad!
